چکیده

Sputum induction has been used to study asthma in children since the first description of the technique in 1992 [1]. Since then, w20 reports (five reviews) have appeared in the literature describing sputum induction in children with airways disease. In general, sputum induction in children of w6 yrs is safe and has a satisfactory success rate. Approximately 500 children have been studied by sputum induction. The diagnoses of the studied children include stable asthma (n=308), acute asthma (n=18) and healthy control subjects (n=185). Studies have included children aged 5–18 yrs, with a mean age of 11.2 yrs. Most studies have included children of w6 yrs. Studies of children with asthma have included subjects across the spectrum of severity. The following issues regarding sputum induction in children are reviewed in the present article: 1) protocols used in children; 2) safety of induction; 3) management of airway obstruction during sputum induction; 4) sputum processing; 5) normal values in children; 6) findings in asthmatic children; 7) effect of treatment on induced sputum parameters; and 8) clinical applications.

Sputum induction for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in infants and young children in an urban setting in South Africa.

BACKGROUND Bacteriological confirmation of pulmonary tuberculosis is difficult in infants and young children. In adults and older children, sputum induction has been successfully used; this technique has not been tested in younger children. AIMS To investigate whether sputum induction can be successfully performed in infants and young children and to determine the utility of induced sputum co...

Induced Sputum in Children

Background: Sputum induction is a noninvasive method for the assessment of airway infl ammation. Objectives: To evaluate the safety of the procedure and the clinical predictors of successful induction, and to analyze the relationship between sputum cell counts and clinical features in asthmatic and nonasthmatic children. Methods: We reviewed sputum inductions performed in our department between...

Sputum Induction in Children Is Feasible and Useful in a Bustling General Hospital Practice

We prospectively studied the feasibility and effectiveness of sputum induction in obtaining good quality sputum and its subsequent bacterial yield in children with clinically suspected acute lower-respiratory-tract infection (aLRTI). Good quality sputum was collected in 89/98 (91%) patients. Sputum cultures revealed ≥1 bacterial pathogens in 22 cases (25%). Adverse events were infrequent and mi...

Induced sputum in children: feasibility, repeatability, and relation of findings to asthma severity.

BACKGROUND The collection of induced sputum provides a non-invasive method of investigating airway inflammation. Few studies have been performed in children, so a study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of sputum induction, the repeatability of eosinophil counts and sputum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels, and the relation of these to current asthma severity. For comparison, s...

[Induced sputum in children and adolescents with asthma: safety, clinical applicability and inflammatory cells aspects in stable patients and during exacerbation].

OBJECTIVES To determine the safety of sputum induction in asthmatic children and adolescents, to characterize sputum inflammatory cells while clinically stable and during exacerbation and to correlate sputum inflammatory cells with peripheral blood eosinophils, serum IgE and the degree of bronchial obstruction. METHODS Ninety-six asthmatic patients aged 6 to 18 years were recruited for the pr...
